Dhaka, May 17, 2025: Students of the seven colleges have issued a five-point demand, including the publication of the framework for the proposed ‘Dhaka Central University’ (DCU) and the issuance of a notification for forming an interim administration within five working days. They have warned of resuming protests from May 19 if their demands are not met.
At a press conference held at Eden Women’s College on Saturday (May 17), the students stated that their prolonged movement led the University Grants Commission (UGC) to propose a new university named ‘Dhaka Central University.’ However, they noted that there has been little progress beyond the announcement.
The students’ five-point demands include:
- Issuing a notification for the interim administration by Sunday.
- Publishing an academic calendar to resolve session jams, address issues like erroneous results, stop excessive fee collection, and resolve other irregularities.
- Initiating arrangements for the 2024-25 session’s admission tests within two working days of forming the interim administration.
- Publishing the university’s framework and logo/monogram within five working days.
- Issuing the university’s ordinance by June 16 and allocating funds in the 2025-26 fiscal budget.
The students highlighted that their movement, which began in September last year, demanded the cancellation of the colleges’ affiliation with Dhaka University and the establishment of a fully-fledged university. They learned that the UGC has already proposed the name, logo, and model for the new university.
They alleged that a special committee, formed in December to resolve the issue with a four-month deadline, failed to deliver results by April 30. The delay in issuing notifications for the interim administration and ordinance has forced them to remain dependent on Dhaka University, hindering the goal of establishing an autonomous university.
The students emphasized their respect for government decisions and readiness for dialogue, stating they have cooperated through both protests and discussions. They urged the authorities to meet their demands to ensure their right to education.
