Government Must Explain Reasons for Delaying Elections Beyond December: Zonaed Saki

Dhaka, 03 June, 2025 : Zonaed Saki, Chief Coordinator of Ganosamhati Andolan, has stated that the government has announced elections will be held between December and June. However, political parties naturally prefer the elections to take place within December. If, for any reason, the elections are delayed beyond this period, the interim government will need to explain the reasons for the additional time to the public.

He made these remarks on Monday (June 2) evening after a multi-party meeting chaired by the Chief Adviser with the Consensus Commission.
Saki informed that the Consensus Commission will begin its second round of meetings on Tuesday. Detailed discussions on various issues will take place during these meetings. He said, “We aim to make maximum concessions to build as much consensus as possible. The issues on which consensus is reached will be announced in the form of a charter in July.”
He further noted that any issues where disagreements persist after discussions will be resolved through public participation and the election process. The party elected by the people will implement those decisions.

Emphasizing the need for announcing a specific election date, Saki said, “It is essential to declare a definite election date. Public participation must be ensured in matters where there is consensus or disagreement regarding reforms. The public should also be informed about the decisions being made and the steps the government is taking.”
