In a tragic incident in Polupara village of Katabari Union, Gobindaganj Upazila, Gaibandha, a 50-year-old man named Habil Miya, accused of raping a six-year-old girl, was killed in a mob lynching on Saturday night (June 28). Following the incident, additional police have been deployed to maintain law and order in the area due to rising tensions.
According to police and local sources, on Friday afternoon (June 27), Habil Miya allegedly lured the minor girl, a neighbor, to his house and sexually assaulted her before fleeing the scene. The girl was admitted to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. The victim’s father lodged a written complaint with the Gobindaganj Police Station.
On Saturday night, locals spotted Habil in the area, apprehended him, and subjected him to a severe beating. Police rescued him from the scene and rushed him to a hospital, where doctors declared him dead. However, locals believe he died on the spot due to the mob attack.
Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bulbul Islam confirmed the incident over a phone call on Sunday (June 29). He stated that the body has been sent to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.
