Dhaka, 25 June 2025: The interim government of Bangladesh has officially declared 5 August as ‘July Mass Uprising Day’ to commemorate the fall of the Awami League government following a student-led mass uprising. Additionally, 8 August has been designated as ‘New Bangladesh Day’ to mark the formation of the interim government under the leadership of Nobel laureate Professor Muhammad Yunus. The government has also announced 16 July as ‘Shaheed Abu Sayeed Day’ in memory of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, who was the first martyr of the movement, killed by police gunfire during the protests.
According to a press release from the Cabinet Division issued on Wednesday, a circular has been released regarding these declarations. The government has urged all relevant ministries, divisions, and organizations to observe these three days appropriately every year. The ‘July Mass Uprising Day’ on 5 August has been classified as a ‘Category A’ event, while the other two days are categorized as ‘Category B’ events.
The student-led movement, which began in July last year demanding reforms in the quota system for government jobs, gained momentum and led to the resignation of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on 5 August, after which she fled to India. Subsequently, on 8 August, an interim government was formed under Professor Muhammad Yunus to lead the country.
