On Saturday, June 28, the 97th Syndicate meeting of Bangladesh Medical University (BMU), chaired by Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam, approved a budget of Tk 976.11 crore for the 2025-26 fiscal year. This represents an increase of Tk 175.12 crore compared to the Tk 800.98 crore budget of the 2024-25 fiscal year. The budget includes a deficit of Tk 127.87 crore.
The budget was presented by the university’s Treasurer, Professor Dr. Nahreen Akhtar. She announced that Tk 38.20 crore has been allocated for research and training, including Tk 37.10 crore for research and Tk 1.10 crore for training. Additionally, Tk 87 crore has been allocated for medical and surgical services (MSR), Tk 217.32 crore for student scholarships, Tk 9 crore for infrastructure maintenance, Tk 25.02 crore for goods and services, Tk 40.02 crore for equipment (capital), and Tk 23 crore for cleanliness and sanitation.
The budget also includes Tk 233.26 crore for salaries, Tk 190.27 crore for allowances, and Tk 45.15 crore for pensions. Revenue sources include Tk 568.37 crore from the Health, Education, and Family Welfare Division, Tk 144.86 crore from the Ministry of Education (University Grants Commission), and Tk 135 crore from the university’s own income.
In a press conference following the Syndicate meeting, Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Shahinul Alam stated that the university has signed a memorandum of understanding with Kunming Medical University in China to advance education and research activities. Grants have been provided to 81 teachers and 549 students for research purposes. Additionally, 437 individuals have been trained to streamline budget implementation and procurement processes. The allocation for free medicine distribution to patients has been increased to Tk 12 crore. Provisions have also been made for information and technology, infection control, and books and periodicals.
The meeting was attended by distinguished Syndicate members, including Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Dr. Md. Abul Kalam Azad, Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Research and Development) Professor Dr. Md. Muzibur Rahman Hawladar, and other notable figures from the university and related institutions.
