Chattogram, June 8, 2025 – Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury, a member of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party’s (BNP) Standing Committee, has reiterated the party’s demand for holding the national election by December. Speaking to journalists after exchanging Eid greetings with party activists at his residence in Chattogram on Sunday, he emphasized that this stance is supported by over 90% of the country’s political parties.
Khasru rejected the Chief Adviser’s proposal to hold elections in April, arguing that ongoing reforms are nearing completion and could be finalized within one to one-and-a-half months. He stressed that the government’s responsibility is to bring the accused to justice, with courts handling the trials. “If the current government fails to do so, BNP will ensure it,” he asserted.
Highlighting the urgency of holding elections in December, Khasru noted that delaying the polls beyond this period would clash with Ramadan, a month of religious significance, followed by academic examinations, adverse weather, and cyclone season. He suggested that any postponement might serve the interests of a small group, raising suspicions among the public.
Reflecting on BNP’s struggles, Khasru said the party’s activists have faced severe persecution over the past 15 years, with many enduring hardships in fields and farmlands. “This sacrifice has made the party stronger,” he remarked, adding that it remains the party’s greatest asset.
Addressing party workers, Khasru called for clean and tolerant politics, urging respect for differing opinions and emphasizing the need to avoid confrontational politics. “We want political reforms and stronger connections with the people,” he concluded.
