On Wednesday (June 18), after the second day of discussions in the second phase of the Consensus Commission, Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of BNP’s Standing Committee, stated that the proposed National Constitutional Council (NCC) lacks accountability and would create another imbalance in the state. Therefore, BNP does not support the formation of the NCC.
In a briefing, he said, “The responsibilities proposed for the NCC are currently carried out by the executive branch through various laws. This council has no accountability. As a democratic party, BNP cannot support an institution that has authority and power but no accountability.”
Salahuddin Ahmed further stated that there would be no issues if a balance of power between the President and the Prime Minister is maintained and other constitutional positions and institutions are made independent. He proposed the appointment of an ombudsman to ensure good governance and suggested amendments to the Election Commission law. Additionally, he remarked that an independent judiciary would eliminate imbalances.
