June 9, 2025: Chief Adviser of Bangladesh’s interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus, departed for a four-day official visit to the United Kingdom today, Monday. Accompanying him are Bangladesh Bank Governor Dr. Ahsan H. Mansur and Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Chairman Dr. Abdul Momen.
During the visit, Dr. Yunus will meet King Charles III at Buckingham Palace and receive the prestigious ‘King Charles Harmony Award.’ On June 11, he will hold a bilateral meeting with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer. On the same day, Dr. Yunus will deliver a special address at the Royal Institute of International Affairs (Chatham House), highlighting Bangladesh’s socio-economic progress, democratic transition, and future vision.
The UK is Bangladesh’s second-largest trading partner and home to a significant Bangladeshi diaspora, making the bilateral relationship politically and economically vital. Analysts believe this visit could reinvigorate ties between the two nations, fostering closer cooperation in economy, trade, and investment.
Meanwhile, Tulip Siddiq, a former British minister and daughter of Sheikh Rehana, has requested a meeting with Dr. Yunus. According to The Guardian, Siddiq’s letter mentions discussing allegations of corruption raised by the ACC.
Dr. Yunus is also expected to hold courtesy meetings with the Commonwealth Secretary-General and the Secretary-General of the International Maritime Organization (IMO). He is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on June 14.
