International Desk, June 9, 2025: Amid escalating ethnic violence in Manipur, Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla chaired a high-level security review meeting at Raj Bhavan in Imphal on Sunday, June 8, 2025.
The meeting, attended by senior officials including the Security Advisor, Director General of Police (DGP), Additional DGP (Law and Order), IGAR (South), and Inspector General of CRPF, focused on assessing the current law and order situation in the state.
The meeting was convened in response to widespread protests following the arrest of a member of the Meitei armed group Arambai Tenggol, identified as Kanan Meitei, by a joint team of the National Investigation Agency (NIA) and Manipur Police on Saturday night, June 7. The arrest in Imphal West’s Koyakthel area sparked violent protests, with hundreds of people attempting to block the police convoy and free the detainee. Police resorted to firing to disperse the crowd, escalating tensions further.
Governor Bhalla also met with a delegation of 25 MLAs from the BJP, NPP, and Congress, who briefed him on the deteriorating law and order situation and sought his intervention to restore peace. The Governor assured the delegation that all necessary steps are being taken to resolve the crisis and restore normalcy.
In response to the unrest, an indefinite curfew has been imposed in Bishnupur, Kakching, Thoubal, Imphal East, and Imphal West districts. Additionally, internet services have been suspended for five days across these five districts to curb the spread of unrest. The orders were issued on Saturday night following the violent protests triggered by the arrest.
The ethnic violence between the Meitei and Kuki-Zo communities, which began on May 3, 2023, has claimed over 260 lives and displaced thousands. Arambai Tenggol, a prominent Meitei armed group, has been accused of playing a significant role in the violence, particularly targeting the Kuki community.
The state remains under President’s Rule, imposed on February 13, 2025, following months of ethnic clashes and administrative breakdown. Authorities continue to grapple with restoring peace in the ethnically divided state.
