Food Crisis Worsens in Gaza: At Least 66 Children Die of Malnutrition

Amid ongoing Israeli blockade and attacks, the Gaza Strip is facing a severe food crisis, with at least 66 children having died due to malnutrition, according to Gaza’s government media office. The primary cause of this crisis is the restriction on the entry of milk, nutritious food, and other humanitarian aid.

In a statement on Saturday, the media office described the Israeli blockade as a “war crime,” accusing it of being a deliberate act to “systematically starve children to death.” They further stated, “The ongoing crimes against Gaza’s children and the shameful silence of the international community reflect utter disregard for humanity.”

Gaza authorities have held not only Israel but also its Western allies—particularly the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany—responsible for this humanitarian catastrophe. They have urged the United Nations to immediately open all border crossings to allow aid into Gaza. The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) has warned that the number of children suffering from malnutrition in Gaza is rising at an alarming rate. In May alone, 5,119 children aged between 6 months and 5 years were admitted to hospitals due to severe malnutrition—a 50% increase from April and a 150% surge compared to February. UNICEF’s Regional Director for the Middle East and North Africa, Adele Khodr, stated, “From January to May, 16,736 children—averaging 112 per day—received treatment for malnutrition. Every single case was preventable. Food, water, and nutrition are being blocked at the borders due to man-made decisions.”
On Saturday, Israeli attacks across Gaza killed at least 60 Palestinians, including 9 children. In Gaza City’s Tufah neighborhood, two airstrikes destroyed several residential buildings. A local resident, Mahmoud Al-Nakhala, recounted, “We were sitting peacefully when a call from an unknown number instructed us to evacuate the entire block. Now, the area is completely obliterated.” Expressing frustration, he added, “The world watches children die and buildings collapse, yet remains silent. How can such inhumanity persist?”
