Formal Charges Filed in Abu Sayed Murder Case at International Crimes Tribunal

 

Formal charges have been filed in the murder case of Abu Sayed, a student of Begum Rokeya University in Rangpur, at the International Crimes Tribunal-2 on Monday, June 30, 2025. The filing was confirmed by Tribunal Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim.

On June 24, the investigating agency submitted its report to the tribunal’s prosecution wing, along with the weapon used in the murder. The investigation revealed the involvement of 30 individuals, including the then Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner. Currently, four accused are in custody: former proctor of Begum Rokeya University Sharif-ul Islam, former Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Amir Hossain, Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, and Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury. On July 16, 2024, Abu Sayed was fatally shot by police during a protest at Park Mor, in front of Begum Rokeya University, amid the quota reform movement. According to case details, police opened fire on unarmed Abu Sayed during the demonstration. He was rushed to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead. The incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, sparked nationwide outrage, further fueling the quota reform movement. Abu Sayed was a student of the 12th batch of the English Department at Begum Rokeya University and a key coordinator of the quota reform movement
