India Bans Import of Jute, Woven Fabrics, and Yarn from Bangladesh via Land Ports

The Indian government has imposed a ban on the import of jute, woven fabrics, and yarn from Bangladesh through its land ports. On Friday, June 27, 2025, the Director General of India’s Directorate General of Foreign Trade announced this decision in a statement, as reported by Indian media outlet NDTV.

The statement clarified, “No products from Bangladesh, including jute products, multiple-fold woven fabrics, single hemp yarn or fiber, single jute yarn, and unbleached jute woven fabrics, will be allowed to be imported through the India-Bangladesh border land ports.” However, these products can still be imported through the Nhava Sheva seaport in Mumbai. The ban does not apply to Bangladeshi products destined for Nepal and Bhutan, though re-export of these goods is prohibited. Bangladesh is the world’s second-largest jute producer and a leading exporter of jute and jute-related products, while India, despite being the largest jute producer, lags behind Bangladesh in exports. Earlier in May 2025, India had restricted the import of ready-made garments from Bangladesh through land ports, allowing imports only via Nhava Sheva and Kolkata ports. Analysts fear that these restrictions could adversely impact Bangladesh’s jute industry and export sector
