International Crimes Tribunal Issues Arrest Warrants for 26, Including Former BRUR VC Hasibur, in Abu Sayeed Murder Case

On Monday (June 30, 2025), the International Crimes Tribunal-2 issued arrest warrants against 26 individuals, including the fugitive former Vice-Chancellor of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR), Hasibur Rahman, in connection with the murder case of Abu Sayeed, the first martyr of the July Mass Uprising. The court accepted the formal charges submitted earlier that day.

The charges were filed against 30 individuals, including the former proctor of Begum Rokeya University, with the investigation report implicating 30 people, including the then Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner, in the murder of Abu Sayeed. The investigation agency submitted its report to the tribunal’s prosecution on June 24, along with the weapons used in the killing.

Currently, four accused individuals are in custody: former BRUR proctor Shariful Islam, former Assistant Sub-Inspector of Police Amir Hossain, Constable Sujan Chandra Roy, and Chhatra League leader Imran Chowdhury.
On July 16, 2024, Abu Sayeed, a student of the English Department (12th batch) at Begum Rokeya University and a key coordinator of the quota reform movement, was shot dead by police at Park Mor in front of the university during a protest demanding quota reforms in government jobs. He was taken to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.

A video of the police shooting Abu Sayeed went viral, sparking widespread outrage across the country and fueling the quota reform movement. The incident drew significant public attention and intensified protests nationwide.
