Abdur Rahman Khan, Chairman of the National Board of Revenue (NBR), has called on NBR officials to set aside past issues and focus on their responsibilities in the interest of the state. Speaking to journalists at the Revenue Building in Agargaon on Monday, he expressed optimism about avoiding future disruptions and urged officials to work with the same efficiency as before.
Khan revealed that as of Monday morning, the NBR had collected over Tk 3.60 lakh crore in revenue for the fiscal year 2024-25. He noted that this figure reflects growth compared to the previous fiscal year (2023-24), when Tk 3.63 lakh crore was collected, according to the Ministry of Finance. Khan added that additional revenue is expected in the coming days, with final figures likely to be confirmed in two to three weeks. He emphasized that the growth in revenue collection is certain compared to the previous year, despite recent disruptions caused by protests.
The government had initially set a revenue collection target of Tk 4.80 lakh crore for the current fiscal year, later revising it to Tk 4.65 lakh crore. However, the NBR is projected to fall short of this target by over Tk 1 lakh crore, marking a record deficit.
The shortfall comes amid recent unrest within the NBR. On May 12, the Ministry of Finance issued an ordinance to dissolve the NBR and split it into two separate entities: the Revenue Policy Division and the Revenue Management Division. This decision triggered protests by NBR officials and employees under the banner of the "Reform Unity Council," who demanded the withdrawal of the ordinance and raised other concerns. The agitation was temporarily halted on May 25 after assurances from the Ministry of Finance to amend the ordinance by July 31. However, protests resumed on June 22, with demands for the removal of the NBR Chairman. On Saturday, NBR officials and employees across the country observed a "complete shutdown" and organized a "March to NBR" as part of their protest program.
