Iran launched an attack on the US-operated Al Udeid Airbase in Qatar on Monday night, in retaliation for a US strike on its nuclear infrastructure, according to a report by The New York Times. Prior to the attack, Iran informed Qatar to minimize casualties and ensure coordination, the influential newspaper stated, citing discussions between Qatari and Iranian officials.
Three Iranian officials told The New York Times that Tehran notified Qatar in advance to limit the damage caused by the strike. The report further noted that Iran intended the attack to be a "symbolic" response to the US strike on its nuclear facilities, while taking measures to prevent the conflict from escalating further.
This is not the first instance of Iran providing prior notification before striking US interests. In 2020, following the US assassination of General Qassem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps’ Quds Force, Iran attacked a US base in Iraq after informing the Iraqi government beforehand.
