Iran Possesses Enough Enriched Uranium for 12 Nuclear Bombs, IAEA Chief Confirms

Rafael Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), has revealed that Iran currently possesses enough enriched uranium to produce approximately 12 nuclear bombs, although the country has not yet manufactured any. In an interview with France Inter Radio on Thursday, Grossi addressed the status of Iran’s nuclear facilities following recent airstrikes by the United States and Israel.

Despite significant damage, Grossi clarified that Iran’s nuclear program remains operational, dismissing claims that the facilities were completely destroyed. He confirmed that centrifuges at the Fordow uranium enrichment facility have been rendered inoperative, but he refrained from providing detailed information about other sites.

Grossi highlighted growing tensions between Iran and the IAEA, noting that Iran has begun questioning the agency’s impartiality. “There is clear tension between the two sides,” he stated.

On June 25, Iran’s parliament passed a bill that could suspend cooperation with the IAEA, pending approval from the Guardian Council. The bill mandates that IAEA inspections require authorization from Iran’s Supreme National Security Council.
Under the 2015 nuclear deal, Iran was permitted to enrich uranium only up to 3.67%. However, the country is now enriching uranium to 60%, dangerously close to the 90% required for weapons-grade material. The IAEA has previously reported Iran’s non-compliance with the terms of the agreement.
