Israel Orders Detention of Aid Ship Bound for Gaza

International Desk : Israel has issued an order to detain a small ship carrying humanitarian aid to the blockaded Gaza Strip. The vessel, carrying 12 activists including renowned environmentalist Greta Thunberg, has reached near Egypt via the Mediterranean Sea and is heading toward Gaza. However, on Sunday (June 8, 2025), Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz instructed that the ship be prevented from reaching Gaza’s coast.

In a statement, Katz said, “I have directed the military to prevent the Madelin Flotilla from reaching Gaza. To Greta Thunberg and her associates, who are accused of being mouthpieces for Hamas, I say clearly: turn back, you will not reach Gaza.”
The ship is carrying one ton of medical supplies and other essential goods. The journey is largely symbolic, aimed at breaking the blockade imposed by Israel on Gaza. According to the activists, if they succeed in reaching Gaza, it could inspire others to bring more aid to the region.
Qatar-based news outlet Al Jazeera is broadcasting the ship’s journey live, generating significant interest among Gaza’s residents. Many have gathered along the coast to catch a glimpse of the vessel and are closely following Al Jazeera’s coverage.
