Kulaura (Moulvibazar), June 16, 2025: Police have arrested Md. Junel Miah (39), a neighbor, for the murder of schoolgirl Nafiza Jannat Anjum (15) in Kulaura, Moulvibazar, after she rejected his romantic advances. Nafiza’s semi-decomposed body was recovered two days after she went missing, on Saturday (June 14), leading to Junel’s arrest late Sunday night.
In a press conference on Monday, Moulvibazar Police Superintendent EMKH Jahangir Hossain revealed that Junel had been proposing love to Nafiza for some time. As a married man with two children, his advances were repeatedly rejected by Nafiza, which fueled his resentment. On June 12, while Nafiza was returning home alone from a private tutoring session, Junel strangled her to death and dumped her body in a nearby stream’s bushes before fleeing.
Based on Junel’s confession, police recovered Nafiza’s burqa, schoolbag, books, and a shoe. He has been sent to Moulvibazar court, where his confessional statement will be recorded under Section 164.
Nafiza, a Class 10 student at Shripur High School, was the daughter of Abdul Khalik and Nasima Akhtar from Sherpur village. Junel, a day laborer from neighboring Daudpur village, lived close to Nafiza’s family. On June 14, Nafiza’s mother, Nasima Akhtar, filed a murder case against unknown persons.
Sub-Inspector Habibur Rahman, the investigating officer, confirmed that legal proceedings against Junel are underway. The incident has sparked grief and outrage in the local community.
