Three Arrested in Motijheel Robbery Case Posing as DB Police

In a robbery incident in Dhaka’s Motijheel, where miscreants posing as Detective Branch (DB) police looted Tk 30 lakh from a businessman, police have arrested three robbers and recovered a HiAce vehicle used in the crime along with Tk 89,000 in cash.

The arrested individuals are Md. Shamim Rahman (29), Md. Mizan Rahman (51), and Robiul Islam Jewel (42).

Between Friday and Sunday (June 27–29), police conducted separate operations in Dhaka and Jhalokathi, leading to their arrests. During the operations, the HiAce vehicle used in the robbery was recovered from Shamim, Tk 80,000 in cash from Mizan, and Tk 9,000 from Jewel.

On Sunday (June 30), Deputy Commissioner (DC) of DMP’s Media and Public Relations Division, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, confirmed these details.
According to DC Talebur, on Thursday, June 26, around 12 PM, two individuals, Md. Khalil Miya and Ibrahim Hossain Rifat, left a business establishment in Wari’s Nawabpur on a scooter to deposit Tk 30 lakh at the City Bank branch in Motijheel. Around 12:45 PM, as they reached near Gharoa Hotel in Motijheel, a group of 6–7 individuals, identifying themselves as DB police, forcibly took them into a HiAce microbus labeled “DB.” The victims were beaten, threatened with weapons, and robbed of Tk 30 lakh. The robbers then tied their hands and feet and dumped them in a dustbin near the Signboard bus stand before fleeing.

Local residents rescued the victims and took them to Proactive Hospital in Signboard for initial treatment, and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for further care. Following a complaint by the business owner, Saidul Islam, a regular case was filed at Motijheel Police Station. The investigating officer, with the help of information technology, conducted operations in Dhaka and Jhalokathi from Friday to Sunday, resulting in the arrest of the three suspects. During the arrests, the HiAce vehicle, Tk 80,000 from Mizan, and Tk 9,000 from Jewel were recovered.
Mizan has two additional robbery cases against him in Jhalokathi’s Rajapur and Narayanganj’s Araihazar police stations. Legal action has been taken against the arrested individuals, and operations are ongoing to recover the remaining looted money and apprehend other absconding robbers involved in the case.
