Tragic Plane Crash in Gujarat: Nearly 300 Dead

International Desk : In one of the deadliest aviation disasters in recent history, nearly 300 people lost their lives when a Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner crashed into a medical college hostel in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, India, on Wednesday, June 12, 2025. Of the 242 passengers on board, 241 perished, and over 50 students residing in the hostel also lost their lives.

Gujarat police official Vidhi Chaudhary told Reuters, “The crash claimed approximately 294 lives, including several students from the medical college hostel.” Remarkably, one passenger survived the disaster, seated in row 11-A near the emergency exit, which likely contributed to their survival. Chaudhary added that there could be more survivors in hospitals.
Ahmedabad Police Chief G.S. Malik confirmed that over 200 bodies have been recovered from the crash site, including passengers and students. Among the deceased is former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani.

India’s Health Secretary Dhananjay Dwivedi has urged family members of the victims to provide DNA samples to aid in identifying the bodies. The aircraft disintegrated upon impact, with its tail section still lodged in the roof of a hostel building.
The Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner, considered one of the most advanced aircraft globally, had never experienced a crash of this nature before. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the tragedy.
