The Trump administration, led by President Donald Trump, is planning to invest up to $30 billion in Iran’s nuclear program to support its civilian and peaceful nuclear energy initiatives, aiming to revive the country’s struggling nuclear projects.
According to a report by CNN on Thursday, secret discussions on this issue have been ongoing since early June between the United States, its Middle Eastern allies and partners, and Tehran, predating the recent Iran-Israel conflict.
Four Trump administration officials told CNN that the U.S. wants Iran to permanently halt its uranium enrichment program, which Tehran has declared a "red line." One official stated, “We haven’t backed away from our demands. We want to reach a deal with Iran, and to facilitate that, we’re planning to invest. Initially, $20 to $30 billion is being considered, with part of the funding from the U.S. and the rest from our Middle Eastern allies and partners.”
To bring Iran to the negotiating table, the Trump administration has also proposed unfreezing $6 billion of Iran’s assets held in foreign banks and easing sanctions previously imposed on Iran’s oil exports. However, Washington remains uncertain whether Iran will agree to these proposals.
An official noted, “We’ve conveyed our offer to Iran through backchannels. Tehran has not yet responded positively or negatively. We will continue our efforts.”
Since May, Tehran had been in talks with Washington regarding its nuclear program. However, on June 12, Israel launched airstrikes on Tehran and other cities, alleging Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons. In response, Iran began firing missiles at Israel. On June 23, the U.S. conducted strikes on three Iranian nuclear facilities, and the following day, President Trump announced a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.
