Two Bangladeshis Die in Boating Accident in Canada

09June, 2025 : In a tragic incident, a boat capsized in a lake in Ontario’s Kawartha Lakes region, Canada, resulting in the deaths of two Bangladeshis: Captain Saifuzzaman Guddu, a Boeing 787 pilot for Biman Bangladesh Airlines, and Abdullah Hill Rakib, former vice president of BGMEA and managing director of Team Group. The accident occurred on Sunday, June 8, 2025, around midday.

According to reports, Captain Saifuzzaman arrived in Toronto from Dhaka with his wife and young daughter on Saturday, June 7. The following day, they traveled approximately 130-155 kilometers from Toronto to a cottage in Lindsay, Ontario. During the afternoon, Saifuzzaman, his friend Abdullah Hill Rakib, and Rakib’s son went boating on a small canoe. Strong winds caused the boat to capsize. While Rakib’s son managed to swim to shore, Saifuzzaman and Rakib drowned. Their bodies were later recovered by the Ontario Provincial Police’s Marine, Fire, and Aviation teams.
Authorities confirmed that none of the individuals on the boat were wearing life jackets, which likely contributed to the tragedy. Fahmidah Toni, a relative of Saifuzzaman residing in Mississauga, Canada, confirmed the incident to local media, noting that Saifuzzaman was a highly experienced pilot.
The incident has left the Bangladeshi community in Canada in mourning. Subir Kumar Dey, Foundry President of the Bangladesh Business Chamber of Canada, confirmed the details of the accident.
