On Monday afternoon around 3:30 PM, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farjana Haque granted a two-day remand for accused Mehedi Hasan and Md. Hridoy Islam, and a one-day remand for Md. Ripon.
Earlier, the accused were brought to court from jail. The investigating officer, Police Inspector Md. Akhtar Morshed from the Detective Branch (Ramna Division), requested a four-day remand. During the hearing, state lawyers Shamsuddoha Sumon and Kaiyum Hossain Nayon strongly supported the remand, while the defense lawyer Aminul Karim Liton opposed it and sought bail. After the hearing, the court approved the remand.
While being taken to the lockup after the hearing, accused Hridoy Islam tearfully said, “We are not criminals. We were arrested as suspects. They demanded money, but we are poor and couldn’t pay. Those who paid were released, but we were framed in the case.”
Hridoy further alleged, “They didn’t arrest the real culprits who were at the scene. I sell tea on the footpath and know nothing about the incident. They asked me to be a witness, but I said I don’t know anything. They tortured us with electric shocks and beatings to force confessions. Now they are taking us on remand again. My child will become an orphan.”
The other two accused were also seen crying, showing visible marks of injuries on their bodies, claiming they were brutally beaten. Relatives of the accused present at the scene alleged that instead of apprehending the real culprits, innocent people were being framed and coerced into confessing. They demanded justice.
Defense lawyer Aminul Karim Liton stated, “The accused were tortured during remand. They are innocent, and we demand justice.” However, Liton, known to be a BNP supporter, faced criticism for representing the accused in the murder case of a Chhatra Dal leader.
According to case details, on May 13 at around 11 PM, Shahriar Alam Samy (25) was stabbed while riding a motorcycle through Suhrawardy Udyan. Around midnight, his friends took him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) in a bloodied state, where doctors declared him dead. In the morning, Samy’s elder brother, Shariful Islam, filed a murder case at Shahbagh Police Station, naming 10 to 12 unidentified individuals as accused.
Samy was a student of the 2018-19 academic year in the International Relations Department at Dhaka University and served as the Literature and Publication Secretary of the F Rahman Hall Chhatra Dal.
