Bangladeshi Barge Sinks in Muriganga River in West Bengal

MV Sohan Malti’ Carrying Fly Ash Sinks on Return Journey
A Bangladeshi barge named ‘MV Sohan Malti’ sank in the Muriganga River in the coastal region of South 24 Parganas district, West Bengal, India, while transporting fly ash from Budge Budge back to Bangladesh.

According to sources, on Thursday afternoon, July 17, 2025, the barge’s hull developed a crack, causing water to seep in, and the vessel began to tilt. By Friday morning, July 18, 2025, the barge had almost completely submerged.

The barge was carrying eight crew members, all of whom are safe. The local administration and coast guard have initiated efforts to rescue them and bring them safely to shore.
