A case has been filed in Gopalganj following an attack and arson on a police vehicle during a march organized by the National Citizen Party (NCP) on Wednesday, July 16, 2025. The incident occurred in the Khatiyagarh Charpara area along the Ulpur-Durgapur road in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila. The case names 75 individuals, including the banned Chhatra League’s district president Newton Mollah and general secretary Ataur Rahman, along with 400 to 500 unidentified persons as accused.
Inspector Ahmed Biswas of Gopinathpur Police Outpost filed the case, which was confirmed by Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman on Friday, July 18, 2025, around 3:00 pm. Joint forces have detained 45 individuals in connection with the attack and arson as of Friday morning. The OC did not specify how many of those detained have been formally arrested under this case.
OC Sajedur Rahman stated, “A case has been filed by Inspector Ahmed Biswas of Gopinathpur Police Outpost regarding the attack on police, vandalism, and arson of a vehicle in the Khatiyagarh Charpara area of Ulpur Union, Sadar Upazila. The case names 75 individuals, including banned Chhatra League district president Newton Mollah and general secretary Ataur Rahman, along with 400 to 500 unidentified persons.”
Investigation Inspector Abdullah Al Mamun reported that joint forces detained 14 individuals on Wednesday night and handed them over to Sadar Police Station. These individuals were arrested under Section 54 and sent to jail through the court on Wednesday afternoon. By Friday morning, a total of 45 people had been detained.
The clashes and violence in Gopalganj on Wednesday have resulted in five deaths so far. To control the situation, District Administrator and Magistrate Muhammad Kamruzzaman initially imposed Section 144 on Wednesday. A curfew was later enforced that night. On Thursday evening around 6:30 pm, Dhaka Divisional Commissioner Sharaf Uddin Ahmed Chowdhury held a meeting with law enforcement agencies to review the situation. In a briefing at the District Administrator’s conference room, he announced that the curfew had been extended until 6:00 pm on Friday, with a partial relaxation from 11:00 am to 2:00 pm.
