At Islamic University (IU), six students, including Chhatra Dal leader Anwar Parvez, have been granted re-admission to the Master’s program, bypassing the university’s academic ordinances. This decision has triggered widespread discussion and criticism on campus. The university administration claims that the re-admissions were made under “special consideration” for students who fell behind due to political adversities.
According to the university’s academic ordinance, students who fail to complete their Master’s program within the stipulated time are not eligible for re-admission. However, this rule was disregarded, and six students were re-admitted for the 2022-23 academic year. The administration stated that, following August 5, students at Dhaka University and other institutions who could not complete their studies due to political obstacles were allowed re-admission to regular Master’s programs. Islamic University adopted a similar approach, considering political adversities as the basis for re-admissions. However, not all re-admitted students cited political reasons; one student, Anwar Parvez, joint convener of the university’s Chhatra Dal unit, applied citing family issues. Sources revealed that Anwar Parvez began his undergraduate studies in the Statistics Department in the 2011-12 academic year and enrolled in the Master’s program in 2016-17 but failed to complete it. He applied for re-admission citing family problems. Although the departmental committee recommended his application, the academic branch deemed it non-compliant and sent it to the Vice-Chancellor’s office. Initially approved by the Vice-Chancellor, the decision was later suspended due to ordinance violations. Following discussions in the Academic Council, a scrutiny committee was formed, and based on its recommendation, the re-admissions were approved by the Syndicate. University sources indicated that Anwar Parvez’s claimed family issues were not genuine. Despite alleging political repression, he was regularly present on campus, participating in inter-departmental and inter-hall football tournaments during the Awami League regime. He resided in the hall until 2017 and was seen on campus afterward, engaging in activities like football tournaments. Anwar Parvez stated, “I applied for re-admission in November last year. The Vice-Chancellor initially approved it, but it was later suspended. After Syndicate verification, the re-admission was approved.” He added, “There’s no need for controversy over the decision of the university’s highest authority. A certain group is trying to make me controversial.” Acting Registrar Professor Dr. Monjurul Haque said, “Re-admissions were considered solely based on political adversities. No other reasons, such as family issues, were taken into account.” The convener of the scrutiny committee, Professor Dr. Nazibul Haque, stated, “The decision was made by the Academic Council; we only conducted the verification.”Wednesday, July 9, 2025
