Zakir Hossain, Commissioner of Chittagong Custom House, has been temporarily suspended. The action was taken by National Board of Revenue (NBR) Chairman Abdur Rahman Khan due to Hossain's participation in the "Shutdown" and "March to NBR" programs organized by the NBR Reform Unity Council on Saturday and Sunday. The suspension was announced in a notification issued late Tuesday night (July 1).
Despite Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed's statement on Monday that there would be no issues for those providing services properly, the NBR took this disciplinary measure. According to NBR sources, the NBR Reform Unity Council announced a complete shutdown and "March to NBR" program starting Saturday (June 28), demanding the removal of the NBR Chairman. Officers and employees from various NBR offices across the country participated in these programs. To curb the movement, the interim government’s advisory council declared NBR officials and employees’ services as essential. Following this, the Unity Council announced the withdrawal of the programs on Sunday night (June 29). On the same day, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) announced an investigation against six officials, including the president and vice-president of the Unity Council, for allegedly causing revenue losses and acquiring illegal wealth. On Tuesday, the ACC issued a press release announcing investigations against three more NBR officials, including five others involved in the movement’s forefront. The suspension of the Chittagong Custom House Commissioner was based on allegations of causing revenue losses due to his presence at the Saturday and Sunday programs.Wednesday, July 2, 2025
