College Student Stages Kidnapping and Assault Drama to Buy iPhone in Rupganj

Rupganj Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tarikul Islam confirmed on Thursday (July 24) at around 12:30 PM that a college student named Mahia Akter, along with two classmates, orchestrated a fake kidnapping and gang assault to extort money from her parents to purchase an iPhone. The police have detained Mahia’s two classmates, Sifat Mia and Sinthia Akter, for initial questioning.

Mahia Akter, a student of Class XI at Government Murapara College in Rupganj, Narayanganj, was at the center of this incident. According to OC Tarikul Islam, on Wednesday (July 23), news spread that a Class XI student from Murapara College had been kidnapped and gang-assaulted. The student’s family lodged a kidnapping complaint with the Rupganj Police Station. Mahia was subsequently rescued and sent to the Upazila Health Complex for initial treatment and later to Narayanganj for further medical examination.

Police investigations, aided by advanced technology, revealed that Mahia had been planning to buy an iPhone for some time. To fund this, she conspired with her classmates Sifat and Sinthia to stage a kidnapping. On Tuesday morning, Mahia left her home for Murapara College as part of the plan. Sifat, posing as a kidnapper, called Mahia’s mother and demanded a ransom of 1 lakh taka, threatening gang assault if the money was not paid.

On Tuesday night, Mahia stayed at her friend Sinthia’s house, as confirmed by Sinthia’s family. On Wednesday, when Mahia’s family failed to provide the ransom, she purchased Tushka syrup through Sifat, consumed half of it, and lay down behind Murapara College to create the appearance of being abandoned. Sifat then called Mahia’s family, stating that since the ransom was not paid, they had left her behind the college.

The police have detained Sifat for questioning, and legal action will be taken against those involved after the interrogation is complete.
