College Student’s Body Found in Paddy Field Near Her Home

The body of a college student named Sultana Akter, also known as Ratna (20), was recovered from a recently planted Aman paddy field near her home in Debiganj Upazila, Panchagarh. The body was found on Wednesday morning, July 30, 2025, in the Majhapara area of Debiganj Sadar Union.

Sultana Akter, daughter of farmer Robiul Islam from the same area, was a first-year undergraduate student at Debiganj Women’s College. Police initially suspect that she was murdered.

Citing the victim’s family and locals, Isadul Islam, a member of Ward No. 4 of Debiganj Sadar Union, said that on Tuesday night, around 12 a.m., Sultana served dinner to her father before going to her room to sleep. On Wednesday morning at around 7 a.m., some farmers spotted a girl lying face down in a paddy field about 200 yards from her home, near a eucalyptus garden. They alerted nearby residents, and the victim’s family members arrived at the scene, identifying the body as Sultana Akter. Her elder brother, Mamun Islam, brought the body back home. Isadul Islam further stated that a vanity bag, some clothes, and a mobile phone cover were found near the body, but the victim’s mobile phone was missing. Upon receiving the news, Debiganj Police Station recovered the body from the house and, after conducting a preliminary inquest, sent it to the morgue of Panchagarh Modern Sadar Hospital for an autopsy. Prabir Kumar Sarker, Investigation Officer at Debiganj Police Station, said that during the initial inquest, a faint mark was observed on the victim’s neck, but no other visible injuries were found on her body. The incident is being treated as a possible homicide, and the exact cause of death will be determined after the autopsy report is received. The victim’s family has not yet filed a case. Both the police and a team from the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) are investigating the incident.
