Husband Sentenced to Death for Killing Wife Over Dowry in Sirajganj

In Sirajganj’s Tarash, a court has sentenced a man to death for murdering his wife, Sabina Yasmin (30), over a dowry demand of Tk 2 lakh. The convict has also been fined Tk 1 lakh. Additionally, he was sentenced to seven years in prison and fined Tk 10,000 under Section 201 of the Penal Code.

The verdict was delivered by Judge Begum Salma Khatun of the Sirajganj Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal on Wednesday (July 30) at around 3 PM.

The convicted individual is Md. Matiur Rahman Khadgir, alias Abdul Matin (46), a resident of Tarash Upazila in Sirajganj. Court Peshkar Md. Tar Hossain confirmed the information to Kalbela. According to the case details, on June 2, 2010, Abdul Matin married Sabina Yasmin, daughter of Abdul Kader from Terodona village in Manikganj’s Ghior Upazila. Shortly after the marriage, Matin began demanding Tk 2 lakh as dowry from Sabina’s family. Her father, Abdul Kader, refused to comply. On September 26, 2011, Matin visited his in-laws’ house with Sabina to demand the dowry but was turned away. Upon returning home, he brutally beat Sabina. Two days later, both Sabina’s and Matin’s mobile phones were found switched off. After days of no contact, Sabina’s family, including her father, went to Bhayat village in Tarash on September 10 to look for her. Unable to find her, they searched relatives’ homes. On October 13, a relative informed them that police had recovered an unidentified woman’s body from Tarash, which was also broadcast on television. Upon inquiry at Tarash Police Station, Sabina’s family identified her body. The police informed them that her body was recovered from a paddy field in Mathurapur on September 29. Following the incident, Sabina’s brother, Abdur Razzak, filed a case at the police station, naming five individuals as accused. After investigation, the police submitted a chargesheet against Abdul Matin. The court announced the verdict on Wednesday after completing the hearings.
