Cox’s Bazar: No New Godfathers Will Be Allowed to Emerge, Says Nahid Islam

Nahid Islam, the convener of the National Citizens Party (NCP), has declared that no new "godfathers" will be allowed to emerge in Bangladesh. Speaking at a public gathering organized by the NCP at Shahid Daulat Maidan in the Cox’s Bazar Public Library premises on Saturday (July 19), he emphasized the need to eradicate mafia rule, godfatherism, dynastic politics, and autocracy to establish a people’s democratic Bangladesh.

“Hasina was a godfather, and under her, smaller godfathers operated across Bangladesh. We have put an end to that godfatherism. We will not allow any new godfathers to emerge. We must eliminate mafia rule, godfatherism, dynastic politics, and autocracy from Bangladesh to establish a people’s democratic nation,” Nahid Islam stated during the event, which was part of the NCP’s “July March for Nation-Building.”

Highlighting Cox’s Bazar’s significance, Nahid said, “From the Himalayas to the Bay of Bengal, Bangladesh belongs to its people. We are the inheritors of a civilization born from the Bay of Bengal. We know that the people of Cox’s Bazar live through struggle and courage, and Cox’s Bazar is synonymous with resilience and bravery.” Addressing the tourism industry, Nahid remarked, “Cox’s Bazar is renowned for tourism, but we have failed to give this industry the respect it deserves. The people of Cox’s Bazar have not been adequately involved in developing this sector. Instead, it has been exploited under the guise of tourism. We want an environmentally friendly Cox’s Bazar where the rights of its people are ensured.” On the Rohingya crisis, Nahid expressed sympathy for the Rohingya community but stressed the need for a balanced approach. “The Rohingya have been rendered stateless and deprived of rights, and we feel for them. However, it is not a solution for Bangladesh to bear their responsibility year after year. While addressing the Rohingya issue, we must also ensure justice for the people of Cox’s Bazar. Their security and law and order must not be compromised. We need to take swift measures for the repatriation of the Rohingya.” Appealing to the interim government and the global community, Nahid urged, “I call upon Dr. Yunus and the conscience of the world to resolve the Rohingya issue promptly. Ensure the Rohingya are repatriated to their homeland with dignity and rights.” The event was attended by key NCP figures, including Senior Joint Secretary Dr. Tasnim Zara, Chief Coordinator Nasiruddin Patwary, and South Region Chief Organizer Hasnat Abdullah.
