In Gopalganj, a group of individuals attacked leaders and activists of the National Citizen Party (NCP) after a rally at the municipal park, leading to violence and clashes. Following the incident, police have filed another case under the Anti-Terrorism Act, alleging the burning of a police vehicle and the obstruction of roads by felling trees in the Sadar Upazila’s Satpar area.
On Friday night, Sub-Inspector (SI) Shamim Al Mamun of Sadar Police Station filed the case, naming 54 individuals and listing 350 unidentified persons as accused. Of those named, 44 have been arrested and sent to jail through the court, confirmed Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mir Mohammad Sajedur Rahman to *Prothom Alo*.
With this, a total of four cases have been filed in Gopalganj over attacks on police, vandalism of vehicles, arson, and alleged anti-state activities. These cases were filed over the past two days at Sadar, Kashiani, and Kotalipara police stations. The four cases name 354 individuals from the banned Awami League and its affiliate organizations, along with 2,650 unidentified persons as accused.
From Wednesday to Saturday noon, law enforcement conducted operations across the district, arresting 306 individuals who were sent to jail through the court. Of these, 119 were arrested in the last 24 hours.
According to police sources from the district’s five police stations, the arrests include: 92 in Sadar (including 44 new arrests), 77 in Kashiani (including 33 new arrests), 88 in Muksudpur (including 22 new arrests), 27 in Tungipara (including 10 new arrests), and 22 in Kotalipara (including 10 new arrests).
On Wednesday, leaders, activists, and supporters of the Awami League and its affiliates attacked an NCP program, leading to clashes with law enforcement. So far, five people have died, and over 50 have been injured. To control the situation, District Administrator and Magistrate Muhammad Kamruzzaman initially imposed Section 144 on Wednesday. A curfew was enforced that night, which has been extended multiple times but relaxed from morning to 8 PM today.
