Election is Bangladesh’s Internal Matter: Chinese Ambassador

Yao Wen, the Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka, has stated that the formation of a national government and the timing of national elections in Bangladesh are entirely internal matters of the country.

Speaking at the ‘DCAB Talk’ event organized by the Diplomatic Correspondents Association, Bangladesh (DCAB) at the National Press Club on Tuesday (July 29), he made these remarks in response to a question.

Yao Wen said, “Whether a national government is formed in Bangladesh or not is an internal matter. The timing of Bangladesh’s elections is also an internal matter.” Commenting on the United States’ tariff policies, Yao Wen noted that they pose a significant threat to Bangladesh’s sovereignty and economic development. He expressed hope that Bangladesh would successfully navigate these challenges. He further stated that the US tariff policies contradict the principles of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and could create instability in the global economy. Regarding the Teesta multipurpose project, he said that China is fully prepared to implement it, and the decision now rests with Bangladesh. On the topic of trilateral cooperation between Bangladesh, China, and Pakistan, Yao Wen said that China is eager to work collaboratively with both Bangladesh and Pakistan. “Our goal is to build a developed, prosperous, and sovereign neighborhood. This initiative is not against any third party,” he added. He also mentioned that no South Asian country has formally expressed concerns about this initiative.
