Dhaka, July 19, 2025: A large number of leaders and activists of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami gathered at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital for their “National Rally” on Saturday. The event, scheduled to begin at 2:00 PM, is being presided over by the party’s Ameer, Shafiqur Rahman, with central leaders set to deliver speeches.
The rally kicked off its first phase in the morning with cultural programs. The formal proceedings began at 10:00 AM with the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by performances of Hamd-Naat and Islamic songs. The main phase of the rally is set to commence at 2:00 PM.
Since Friday evening, Jamaat leaders and activists started gathering at the venue. From early Saturday morning, processions from various parts of the capital have been heading toward Suhrawardy Udyan, with participants chanting slogans like “Make the rally a success.” Crowds of Jamaat supporters were also seen traveling via metro rail to attend the event.
In a press conference on Thursday, Jamaat-e-Islami announced that they had invited leaders from various political parties, including BNP, NCP, and Islami Andolan, to attend and speak at the rally.
According to party leaders, this is the first time since Bangladesh’s independence that Jamaat-e-Islami is holding a rally at Suhrawardy Udyan. The event comes amid political unrest triggered by an attack on an NCP rally in Gopalganj by the banned Awami League and its student wing, Chhatra League, as well as ongoing disagreements among political parties regarding the upcoming national election and key reforms. To ensure a large turnout, the party has taken extensive measures, including arrangements for transportation via rail, waterways, and roads.
Jamaat-e-Islami stated that the rally’s key demands include ensuring a level playing field for all in a free, fair, neutral, and peaceful election, implementing fundamental reforms, fulfilling the July Charter and Declaration, and holding the national election under a proportional representation (PR) system.
