The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has recovered cheques worth Tk 2.25 crore from the residence of Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman Riyad, an expelled leader of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, who was arrested for attempting to extort money from an Awami League leader’s home in Gulshan, Dhaka.A new case is being filed at Kalabagan Police Station in connection with this incident.
On Wednesday (July 30), DMP’s Deputy Commissioner (DC) of Detective Branch, Muhammad Talebur Rahman, shared these details during a press conference at the DMP Media Center on Minto Road, Dhaka. He stated that five individuals, currently in remand, were arrested recently in Gulshan on charges of extortion. Among them, cheques worth Tk 2.25 crore were recovered from Riyad’s residence, and a separate case is being filed at Kalabagan Police Station.
On Monday (July 28) night, police conducted a raid at Riyad’s home, recovering cheques worth Tk 2.25 crore and documents related to Fixed Deposit Receipts (FDRs) amounting to approximately Tk 20 lakh.
Earlier, on July 26, five individuals, including three leaders of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, were arrested while attempting to extort money from the residence of former Awami League MP Shammi Ahmed in Gulshan-2. A case was filed at Gulshan Police Station by Siddique Abu Zafar, naming Riyad along with other accused: Kazi Gaurab Apu, Sakadaun Siyam, Sadman Sadab, Md. Ibrahim Hossain, and Shishu Aminul Islam.
Following their arrest, the police presented the accused in court, requesting a 10-day remand for interrogation. After the hearing, the court granted a seven-day remand for four of the accused—Abdur Razzak Bin Sulaiman Riyad, Sakadaun Siyam, Sadman Sadab, and Md. Ibrahim Hossain. The fifth accused, a minor, was sent to a juvenile correction center.
Meanwhile, the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement expelled its Dhaka metropolitan branch convener, Ibrahim Hossain Munna, and members Sakadaun Siyam and Sadman Sadab for engaging in activities against the organization’s principles and discipline. The decision was approved by the movement’s president, Rifat Rashid, and general secretary, Hasan Inam, who also instructed all members to sever organizational ties with the expelled individuals.
