Two-Day Remand for Ivy in Rickshaw Puller Murder Case

A court in Narayanganj has granted a two-day remand for Dr. Selina Hayat Ivy, former mayor of Narayanganj City Corporation and ex-senior vice-president of the district Awami League, in connection with the murder case of rickshaw puller Tuhin. The decision was made on Monday (July 7) afternoon following a hearing at the court of Narayanganj Senior Judicial Magistrate Mainuddin Kadir. Ivy participated in the hearing virtually from Kashimpur Prison.

Court Police Inspector Md. Kaiyum Khan confirmed the development, stating that the police had sought a seven-day remand for questioning Ivy in the Tuhin murder case. After the hearing, the court granted a two-day remand.

According to case details, on July 20 last year, during the anti-discrimination student-public movement, rickshaw puller Tuhin (36) was killed by a gunshot to the head in the Shimrail area of Narayanganj’s Siddhirganj along the Dhaka-Chittagong highway. On September 13 of the same year, Tuhin’s wife, Aleya Akter Mim, filed a murder case naming 99 individuals, with Ivy listed as the 11th accused.

Ivy’s lawyer, Advocate Aolad Hossain, stated that a criminal miscellaneous case was filed in the district judge’s court, but Ivy’s bail application was rejected. With a bail application still pending in the High Court Division of the Supreme Court, a request to postpone the remand hearing was made but not entertained by the court. Following the hearing, a two-day remand was granted.
Acting Public Prosecutor Advocate Omar Faruk Noyon, representing the state, noted that while the police sought a seven-day remand, the court approved two days. The defense’s request to defer the remand hearing was denied, and the court finalized the decision after hearing both sides.
