Two Parties Oppose Change in Chief Justice Appointment Process, Others Agree: Ali Riaz

Professor Ali Riaz, co-chair of the National Consensus Commission, stated that, except for two political parties, all others have agreed to change the existing process for appointing the Chief Justice. He added that further discussions on this matter will take place next week.

Speaking after the second day of the second phase of discussions with political parties on reforms at the Foreign Service Academy’s Doyel Hall in the capital on Tuesday, Ali Riaz shared these insights.

He noted that political parties have reached a consensus on appointing representatives from the opposition to lead four key parliamentary standing committees: the Public Accounts Committee, the Privilege Committee, the Estimates Committee, and the Public Undertakings Committee. Additionally, the parties agreed to grant greater independence to parliament members on matters beyond financial bills and votes of confidence, as outlined under Article 70 of the Constitution. On the issue of women’s representation in parliament, Ali Riaz said there was agreement to designate 100 permanent seats for women. “The method and framework for women’s representation will be discussed later. We hope to finalize decisions on this matter next week,” he added. Regarding the proposal for a bicameral parliament, some parties raised principled objections. Ali Riaz remarked, “Some parties believe this issue requires reconsideration. However, discussions are progressing positively, and we hope to finalize a national charter by July.” Addressing the absence of Jamaat-e-Islami’s representation in the discussions, he said, “We are in constant communication with Jamaat and other political parties. We hope they will participate tomorrow.”
Responding to allegations from two political parties accusing the Consensus Commission of bias, Ali Riaz stated, “Any political party may raise such allegations. However, we are conducting our activities with complete impartiality.”
