51,000 US Dollars Found in Grass-Filled Sack, Smuggler Arrested in Meherpur

The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested a smuggler with 51,000 US dollars in a raid conducted in the Anandabas border area of Mujibnagar upazila, Meherpur. The market value of the seized dollars exceeds 6.2 million Bangladeshi Taka.

The operation was carried out by Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB) on Friday (August 15) around noon. The arrested individual, Jahangir Sheikh (40), is the son of the late Afsar Sheikh from Anandabas village. According to a BGB press release, Lieutenant Colonel Md. Nazmul Hasan, the commanding officer of Chuadanga Battalion (6 BGB), received confidential information about an attempt to smuggle US dollars through the Anandabas border. A team led by Assistant Director Md. Haider Ali took position in the Fashitola area. Around 12 PM, Jahangir was spotted crossing the zero line with a bicycle carrying a grass-filled sack. Upon apprehension and search, five packets wrapped in black scotch tape containing 51,000 US dollars were recovered. Additionally, a bicycle and a button mobile phone were seized. The total value of the seized dollars and items, as per BGB estimates, is 6,201,540 Bangladeshi Taka. The arrested smuggler, Jahangir, was handed over to Mujibnagar Police Station, where Naib Subedar Md. Harun Or Rashid filed a case as the complainant. Mujibnagar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman told Kalbela that the accused will be sent to jail through the court, and the process to deposit the seized dollars at the Treasury Office is underway.
