All Garment Factories to Remain Closed on August 5

Dhaka, August 3, 2025: The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has announced a general holiday for all garment factories across the country on August 5 to honor the martyrs of the July uprising and to express solidarity with the government’s decision.

In a statement issued on Sunday (August 3), the BGMEA urged all garment factories to observe August 5 as a general holiday. The statement noted that the government has declared August 5 as “July Mass Uprising Day,” a public holiday. However, under Section 118 of the Bangladesh Labour Act, 2006, and Rule 110 of the Labour Rules, 2015, garment factories are not legally obligated to observe public holidays beyond the 11 festival holidays predetermined at the start of the year.

Despite this, the BGMEA emphasized, “In remembrance of the martyrs and to respect the government’s decision, we specially request all garment factories to observe August 5 as a general holiday.”
