Argentina Match Abandoned Due to Fan Violence: 10 Injured, 90 Arrested

Buenos Aires, August 20, 2025 – A Copa Sudamericana match between Argentina’s Independiente and visiting Universidad de Chile was abandoned due to violent clashes between rival fans at the Libertadores de America Stadium in Buenos Aires. The incident left 10 people injured and led to the arrest of 90 individuals, as confirmed by club officials and police to international media.

The violence erupted at halftime during the second leg of the last-16 tie in the regional competition. Fans began throwing objects, including a stun grenade, onto the field, prompting officials to initially suspend the match shortly after the break and later cancel it entirely. Chaotic scenes unfolded as one Chilean fan jumped from the stands to escape attacking Independiente supporters after being cornered. An AFP reporter at the scene reported that home supporters stormed the away section, beating and stripping some visiting fans of their clothing.

According to a security ministry source, “90 people were detained outside the stadium for attempting to cause trouble and have been taken to the police station.” The violence began when Universidad de Chile fans threw stones, sticks, bottles, and seats at the section housing Independiente supporters.

An Independiente spokesperson confirmed that 10 people were injured. The match was tied at 1-1 when abandoned in the 48th minute, with Universidad de Chile leading 2-1 on aggregate after winning the first leg 1-0. Both clubs condemned the violence, and players’ attempts to calm the situation were unsuccessful. Chile’s ambassador to Argentina, Jose Antonio Viera-Gallo, reported to Chilean radio station Cooperativa FM that “there were stab wounds” and at least one person was seriously injured, though their nationality remains unclear. Chile’s President Gabriel Boric called for justice against those responsible and criticized the event organizers.
