Students of Haidgaon High School in Patiya, Chattogram, staged a protest and boycotted classes on Thursday following an attack on their headteacher. The incident occurred around 9:30 am at Kelishahar Road in the Patiya municipal area. The assaulted headteacher, Shyamal Kanti Dey, is currently receiving treatment at Chattogram Medical College Hospital. After news of the attack spread, students boycotted classes and protested, demanding justice for those involved in the assault. According to teachers and eyewitnesses, Shyamal Kanti Dey was traveling to the school in a CNG auto-rickshaw with two other teachers, Tania Yasmin and Pranta Barua. Around 9:30 am, six to seven youths stopped the auto-rickshaw at Kelishahar Road and attacked Shyamal Kanti Dey, beating him indiscriminately. When Tania Yasmin and Pranta Barua raised an alarm, local residents intervened and rescued the headteacher. Tania Yasmin told Prothom Alo that the attackers were shouting abuses and questioning why a case had been filed, while also threatening to kill Shyamal Kanti Dey. Local residents responded to their cries for help and saved him. Shyamal Kanti Dey told Prothom Alo that a powerful local group has been conspiring against him for a long time over the appointment of the school’s president. He alleged that they have organized protests and attempted mob attacks against him. He had previously faced multiple threats and filed two general diaries (GDs) with Patiya Police Station regarding these incidents. Patiya Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge (OC) Nuruzzaman said police were sent to the scene upon receiving news of the attack. Legal action will be taken against the attackers once a formal complaint is received. Patiya Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Farhanur Rahman stated, “I am aware of the attack on the headteacher. The police and army have been informed. Steps will be taken to identify the attackers and bring them to justice. The headteacher had previously filed GDs, and a regular case will be initiated based on those.”
