Bangladesh Faces Potential Cyberattack Threats Ahead of Elections, Warns Expert

Dhaka, August 21, 2025 – Foyez Ahmed Taiyeb, a cybersecurity expert, has warned of potential large-scale cyberattacks targeting Bangladesh’s financial sector and other key industries in the lead-up to the national elections scheduled for February 2026. Speaking on Wednesday, Taiyeb urged stakeholders to rethink and strengthen cybersecurity measures to counter these looming threats.

Last month, the Bangladesh Bank issued a warning to banks, financial institutions, and digital payment service providers about the risk of cyberattacks. In a letter from the bank’s Information and Communications Technology (ICT) Department, it highlighted concerns over possible attacks on critical information infrastructure (CII), including banks, financial institutions, healthcare systems, and public and private organizations. The warning was based on information from various sources indicating heightened risks.

The letter instructed banks, financial institutions, and payment service providers to urgently implement necessary cybersecurity measures to prevent small and medium-scale cyberattacks. This follows growing concerns about vulnerabilities in the country’s digital infrastructure as the election approaches, a time when cyber threats often spike due to political sensitivities.
