BNP Leader Expelled in Kotalipara Over Attack on Two Journalists

In response to an attack on two journalists in Gopalganj’s Kotalipara upazila, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) has expelled its upazila unit member, HM Abul Bashar (Bacchu), from the party.

On Wednesday, August 27, a press release signed by Gopalganj district BNP convener Sharif Rafiquzzaman and acting member secretary Advocate Abul Bashar Khaer confirmed the expulsion.

According to reports, HM Abul Bashar Bacchu, along with others, attacked Kaler Kantho representative Mizanur Rahman Bulu and Jugantor representative HM Mehedi Hasanat on Tuesday, following a published news report. The assault left both journalists injured. When the issue came to the attention of senior BNP leaders at the district and upazila levels, they decided to expel Bacchu and issued a press release. The press release stated: “As per the decision of the Gopalganj district branch of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), HM Abul Bashar Bacchu has been expelled from all posts in the Kotalipara upazila BNP for violating party discipline and engaging in activities contrary to the party’s principles and ideals.” It further instructed all leaders and activists of the Gopalganj district BNP, its affiliate organizations, and the Kotalipara upazila BNP to sever all organizational ties with HM Abul Bashar Bacchu. Following Bacchu’s expulsion, journalists in Kotalipara upazila called off their planned three-day protest and pen-down strike. Gopalganj district BNP convener Sharif Rafiquzzaman said, “By attacking journalists, HM Abul Bashar Bacchu violated party discipline. We cannot keep such individuals in the party under any circumstances, which is why we have expelled him.” HM Mehedi Hasanat, president of the press club and Jugantor representative, said, “Our demand was that BNP take action against HM Abul Bashar Hawladar Bacchu. Since the party has acted, we have withdrawn our planned three-day protest and pen-down strike from 11 AM to 12 PM.” Kotalipara police station officer-in-charge Khandakar Hafizur Rahman stated that legal action is being taken against the attackers.
