BNP Ready to Sign July Charter: Salahuddin

The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) is prepared to sign the July Charter at any time, according to Salahuddin Ahmed, a member of the party’s standing committee. Speaking at a press conference at his Gulshan residence on Monday (August 4), he highlighted the party's stance on the matter.

Salahuddin stated that after receiving the July Charter, BNP responded on July 30 with some proposed amendments. He emphasized that the party has extended maximum cooperation in implementing the charter.

He further noted that the July Declaration holds historical and political significance. BNP had already responded to the charter’s proposals in February, expressing dissent over the inclusion of March 26 and opposing its presentation in the charter. Additionally, BNP proposed that state and constitutional recognition should be granted through the Fourth Schedule. If the proposed amendments are not accepted, BNP will provide its next response after the charter is presented. Addressing concerns that BNP is not cooperating in the charter’s implementation, Salahuddin clarified that the party has provided full support and will only sign the charter once assurances are received. He also called for unity to maintain the anti-fascist alliance. Salahuddin revealed that discussions were held in the consensus commission regarding 19 fundamental issues proposed by the reform commission. BNP issued a note of dissent on 7 of these issues while agreeing on the remaining 12. He added that BNP has not yet received an invitation to the charter announcement event at Manik Mia Avenue.
