The United States has sharply criticized India for continuing to import oil from Russia, with Stephen Miller, a close aide to U.S. President Donald Trump, alleging that India is effectively funding Russia’s war in Ukraine. According to a Reuters report, Miller made these remarks during an interview on Fox News’ *Sunday Morning Futures* on August 3, 2025.

Miller, a key policy advisor and Deputy Chief of Staff in the Trump administration, stated that India’s purchase of Russian energy is indirectly financing Russia’s military actions in Ukraine, a stance deemed unacceptable by the U.S. administration. He further noted that India’s oil imports from Russia have reached levels comparable to China’s, describing it as a “stunning fact.” This statement is seen as one of the strongest criticisms from the Trump administration against India, a key partner in the U.S.’s Indo-Pacific strategy. The Indian embassy in Washington has not commented on the issue. However, sources close to the Indian government told Reuters on Saturday that India will continue importing oil from Russia despite U.S. pressure and threats. In response to India’s continued purchase of Russian energy and military equipment, the U.S. has imposed a 25% import tariff on Indian goods, effective from Friday. President Trump has further warned that if Russia fails to reach a significant peace agreement to end the Ukraine conflict, the U.S. could impose tariffs of up to 100% on countries importing oil from Russia. Despite the tensions, Miller emphasized the strong and cordial relationship between President Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the importance of their diplomatic ties. Analysts believe that the Russia-Ukraine conflict is intensifying global polarization, and India’s stance may face increasing diplomatic and economic pressure from the U.S. and other Western nations.
