A clash broke out between two factions of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) during a rally organized to mark the July Mass-Uprising Day in Dagonbhuiyan, Feni, injuring at least 15 leaders and activists. The incident occurred on Tuesday afternoon at the Zero Point area of Dagonbhuiyan municipal town.
According to eyewitnesses and party sources, the Dagonbhuiyan Upazila and Municipal BNP organized the rally as part of the party’s central program to commemorate the July Mass-Uprising Day. As the procession reached Zero Point via the Choumuhoni road, another faction of the party, which had already taken position there, launched an unexpected attack.
Among the injured were Upazila Women’s Dal President Jahanara Begum, Chhatra Dal Convener Saimun Haque, Member Secretary Touhidul Islam, and Chhatra Dal activists Sohel, Sarwar, Belal, Sifat, and Milan. They were treated at the Dagonbhuiyan Upazila Health Complex and various local clinics.
Dagonbhuiyan Upazila BNP Convener Akbar Hossain stated, “Our peaceful rally was attacked without provocation by a group led by former Municipal BNP General Secretary Kazi Saifur Rahman, Abul Hashem, and expelled Chhatra Dal member Jamshedur Rahman. Around 10 to 15 leaders and activists were injured.” He added that preparations are underway to file a case regarding the incident.
Denying the allegations, former Municipal BNP General Secretary Kazi Saifur Rahman said, “We were holding a pre-scheduled blood donation program at Zero Point. During the rally, some of their leaders and activists made provocative remarks, leading to a verbal altercation. We later brought the situation under control. In fact, five of our activists were injured in their attack.”
Dr. ASM Sohrab Al Sohain Tanvir, Dagonbhuiyan Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that 12 individuals sought treatment at the health complex due to injuries from the clash. Eleven received primary treatment and were discharged, while one was referred to the Feni 250-Bed General Hospital.
Dagonbhuiyan Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Wahid Parvez stated that police took immediate action to control the tension sparked by the clash during the rally. “No written complaints have been received yet. If a complaint is lodged, we will investigate and take legal action,” he added
