Eight Years of Rohingya Crisis: 11 Countries Stand with Bangladesh

On the eighth anniversary of the Rohingya crisis, 11 Western countries expressed their support for Bangladesh, emphasizing the need for a coordinated international response to address Myanmar’s instability and humanitarian crisis.

A joint statement was issued by Australia, Italy, the United Kingdom, Canada, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Sweden, France, Switzerland, and Finland. The statement was published on Monday morning by the French Embassy in Dhaka via their social media platforms.

The statement highlighted that eight years ago, a large number of Rohingya were displaced to Bangladesh due to military operations in Myanmar. Currently, over 1.1 million Rohingya reside in Bangladesh, with new refugee inflows continuing. The resilience and endurance of the Rohingya people amidst challenging circumstances were praised in the statement. The 11 countries expressed gratitude to the people and interim government of Bangladesh for providing shelter, security, and humanitarian assistance to the Rohingya for years. However, they noted that a lasting solution lies in safe and dignified repatriation, which remains unfeasible due to the lack of conducive conditions in Myanmar. The statement stressed the urgency of addressing the root causes of displacement. The joint statement strongly condemned the violence and human rights violations by Myanmar’s military and armed groups, calling for an end to violence, the release of detainees, and unrestricted access for humanitarian aid. With diminishing humanitarian funding, the statement emphasized the importance of fostering self-reliance among the Rohingya. It also reaffirmed continued support for the local communities in Cox’s Bazar, who have been assisting the refugees for years. The international community underscored the need to ensure meaningful participation and representation of the Rohingya to enable them to live safely and with dignity while in Bangladesh. Eight years on, the global community reiterated its commitment to resolving the crisis and standing by Bangladesh.
