Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson humorously shared that Donald Trump once “pursued” her, calling her to ask her out on a date the very day her divorce papers were finalized. The 66-year-old British actress jokingly remarked that had she accepted, she might have “changed the course of American history.”
On August 8, while receiving the Leopard Club Award in recognition of her acting career at the Locarno Film Festival in Switzerland, Emma shared the anecdote. She recounted receiving an unexpected call from Trump in 1998 while she was shooting the film *Primary Colors*.
Thompson told *The Telegraph* that she was in her trailer when the phone rang. Upon answering, she heard, “Hello, this is Donald Trump.” Initially thinking it was a prank, she responded, “How can I help you?” assuming he might need directions. Trump then invited her, saying, “I’d like you to come stay at one of my beautiful places. Maybe we could have dinner together.”
Emma responded politely, saying, “Oh, that’s a very kind offer. Thank you, I’ll let you know later.”
She later realized the call coincided with the day her divorce papers arrived. “I thought maybe he has people who find him attractive company, especially newly divorced women he’s targeting. And he got my number from my trailer. It felt like being pursued,” she said with a laugh.
Thompson jokingly added that if she had gone on the date with Trump, “I’d have a story to tell. Maybe I could have changed the history of the United States.”
Emma Thompson was previously married to actor Kenneth Branagh from 1989 to 1995. She later married Greg Wise in 2003. Around the same time as her divorce, Trump’s marriage to his second wife, Marla Maples, also ended. He married Melania Trump in 2005.
Previously, Hollywood actress Salma Hayek also revealed receiving a date offer from Trump while she was in a relationship. She shared that during an event, Trump placed his coat over her shoulders while her boyfriend was present. He later obtained her phone number and asked her out.
Hayek recalled telling Trump she had a boyfriend, adding, “Are you crazy?” Trump reportedly replied, “That boyfriend isn’t good enough for you. You should go out with me.”
Salma Hayek is currently married to French billionaire François-Henri Pinault.
