Jakarta, August 31, 2025: Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has canceled his scheduled trip to China due to escalating violent protests across the country, local media reported on Saturday.
Anadolu Agency published a report on Sunday (August 31) confirming the development.
Presidential spokesperson Prasetyo Hadi told state news agency Antara that President Subianto decided to remain in Indonesia to closely monitor the ongoing protests and manage the situation.
Subianto was set to attend the ‘Victory Day Parade’ in Beijing on September 3, at the invitation of Chinese President Xi Jinping, to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II.
“The President wants to directly oversee the situation and find the best solution to the unrest. He has expressed regret to the Chinese government and canceled the visit,” the spokesperson said.
At least three people were killed in violent protests in Jakarta and several other cities on Saturday. The unrest erupted after a mob set fire to government buildings, triggered by the death of a motorcyclist.
Protesters attacked multiple police facilities, set fire to the city’s police headquarters, destroyed numerous vehicles, and threw stones at police officers. Four people were reportedly injured in incidents involving Molotov cocktails.
In Makassar, a fire at the DPRD office led to the rescue of eight people, but three fatalities were reported, according to M. Fadli, acting head of the regional disaster management agency.
The violence began on Thursday when 21-year-old motorcyclist Affan Kurniawan was killed by a police armored vehicle while delivering food, getting caught in a clash.
On Friday, thousands of motorcyclists, activists, and political leaders attended his funeral.
President Subianto expressed deep regret over the incident and ordered an investigation into the involved police officers, stating, “Excessive use of force is unacceptable, and those responsible must be held accountable.”
Indonesia’s Police Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo apologized to the victim’s family and the public, promising a thorough investigation into the incident.[](https://www.kalbela.com/world/asia/218590)
