Police Constable Withdrawn After Rape Threat to Engineering Student

A police constable has been withdrawn from duty after allegedly making offensive comments and issuing a rape threat on social media against a female engineering student involved in a movement. The incident was confirmed by Shakil Ahmed, a BUET student and Senior Vice President of the Engineering Rights Movement, after a meeting with the Dhaka Metropolitan Police Commissioner on Sunday (August 31) evening.

Speaking to journalists, Shakil Ahmed said, “Our female students are receiving various death threats due to their involvement in the movement. Recently, a police constable threatened a female student with murder and rape. After we informed the police, the constable was withdrawn from duty.” However, the identity of the constable has not been disclosed.

Activists of the movement have been facing cyberbullying in various forms. On Sunday afternoon, representatives of the Engineering Rights Movement visited the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) office to address the issue. They held a nearly two-hour meeting with the DMP Commissioner to discuss various concerns. The matter was later shared with journalists.
